Pithoragarh district is a picturesque landscape of grassy meadows, lurking forests in island fashion, beautiful valleys and elevations, having rich varieties of vegetation and animals in its wild, scattered streams and some Himalayan rivers – in a nutshell a breath taking natural beauty unexplored as yet. Snowcapped peaks garland its northern line and are visible from most of the spots of the town.

Pithoragarh town is located at a height of 1645 meters above sea level along the eastern and southern part of the central Himalayas. Other adjoining districts of Uttarakhand state are Almora, Champawat, Bageshwar and Chamoli. The few of the numerous tourist and pilgrimage spots of interest are, Chandag top, to see the first fall of ray of sunrise, Thal Kedar, to stretch your muscles for hiking experience, famous Kali temple and Patal Bhuvneshwar cave of Gangolihat, Tea Garden of Chaukori of Berinag, Base camp of Didihat and Munsyari for Milam, Ralam and Namik Glacier, Base camp of Dharchula for Kailash Mansarover, Adi Kailash and Narayan Swami Ashram and River confluence of Kali and Gori river at Jauljibi.

As per 2011 census, total population of the district is 485993. For medical needs a population of about 6 lacks (including Nepali citizens, migratory population from other states and other adjoining districts) may be expected to seek services in town hospitals. Total literacy rate of the district at present is around 82.93. For children education, district has state board schools and many CBSE affiliated schools. Admission process is relatively easier in the schools.

The town has a vivid market and one can get almost every article of need allowed in Indian market. The weather remains pleasant throughout the year in the town, You do need heavy woollens in winters.

Nearest railway terminals are Kathgodam and Tanakpur. Kathgodam is connected to Pithoragarh by 212 Km long motor route and Tanakpur by 151 Km. The journey sickness immediately fades away by the charm of Pithoragarh moment you step into the town.
